It has its own god, prophet, scriptures, angels, demons, saints, sinners, signs and symbols, moods and methods, rituals, distinctive garb, group identity, vices and virtues, insider/outside mentality, criteria for truth, social structure, interpretive lens through which to discern the significance of all events, small and large gatherings, communication networks and causes worth dying for.
Most of all, it provides the minimal requirement of every religion. This is a "meaning map" by which its members can pinpoint themselves in the history of the universe and know what the purposes of their lives are.
This is the conclusion to which I came after watching Anderson Cooper's CNN documentary.
Neither power (Nietzsche), nor money (Marx) nor sex (Freud) is what humans seek most. Meaning is. The more of it one has the more likely it is that one will have power, money and sex too. Religions are competitors in the marketplace of meaning and there is much to win and lose.
Although this is not true in the relatively insignificant span of a single life or two, in cultural history a religion of some sort is a human must. Atheism is an individual luxury but a cultural impossibility.
Paul Tillich was right: In my words, he said that religion is the inside of culture and culture is the outside of religion. There has never been one without the other and there never will be.
Differences in religions are like points on a compass. They don't matter much if one is traveling a short distance. They matter greatly if one is traveling a long way. Cultures are long journeys.
QAnon is a bad religion. The only solution in the long run to bad religion is good religion. No religion is entirely good or bad. Like everything human, every one of them is a mixture of both. But if cultural flourishing in the long run is the criterion, some are better and some are worse.
Find or create a relatively good religion and, consistent with your other obligations and true pleasures, give it your best. The future of human culture depends on it. If you doubt this, watch Anderson Cooper's documentary on QAnon or another one like it.
